With the rapidly changing world of work and the increasing push for organizations to invest in their human capital, the human resource (HR) function has become an increasingly important facet of any organization. Today, HR is responsible for a wide range of business-based people initiatives and solutions from managing the compensation and benefits strategy, to creating, improving and overseeing the development processes for the organization’s future talent. Kenexa, an IBM Company, interacts with numerous HR functions on a range of transformational programs, which reveal several common challenges for HR. Understanding these challenges is HR’s first step in rising above them.

Bingo Tuzla is a leading retail company in B&H, and is year after year growing significantly. In recent years we are developing in the catering and production category, and we are currently meeting with the problem of finding adequate staff. In Bosnia there is huge unemployment issue but we have very few trained professionals, so we have to rely on our own. We need to continuously teach young people in order to reach an adequate staff which can monitor the growth of the company. A particular challenge for us was the acquisition of retail chain Interex (French group Intermarché) that took place in December 2014. This synergy has resulted with 23 new retail stores and almost 800 new employees, who are supposed to fit in the mode of previous 3500 employees. Synergy both has positive and negative side. Even though companies are based on the same activity, employers have different views and attitude towards the work tasks. We are aware of the danger of outflow of employees, who may not be able to adjust the resulting changes. Therefore we must be prepared to act quickly and find an adequate replacement if needed. The company Bingo has a strong commitment with the long-time employees on whom management can rely on in such situations. Based on previous positive experience we expect this Leadership & HR Business Arena 2015 will offer many answers and provide guidance in future business.
What happens when the world we live in is no longer experienced as hierarchical, linear, rational and predictable? How do we live well and work well in such an unpredictable non- linear world? My talk explores the new reality of a world increasingly out of control, its impact on organizations in terms of creativity, innovation, leadership and consciousness, and asks the big question can we and should we “manage” complexity or is there an alternative?

HR is still the key ingredient to success in all businesses and public services. It is-unfortunately-undervalued by many senior executives and not quite managed properly by HR managers. HR is about people’s talents and motivation. It is about performing but also enjoying. It is time to have a brand new look at the challenges and issues that the HR leaders are facing today and outline the profile of the new HR leader.
